Hard and fast rules:
- Be Kind.
- All feedback must be constructive.
- Comment on what the author is doing well, before offering any constructive feedback.
- Comment on the writing, not the writer.
- Do not give spelling and grammar advice unless it is specifically requested by the author. Authors who want to solicit this type of advice are encouraged to add the Allow Spelling and Grammar Advice Block to the bottom of their post(s) as shown below.

Feel free to offer advice on my spelling and grammar.
- Racist, sexist, religiously intolerant, ableist, homophobic, transphobic, or other hateful comments will be immediately deleted and the commenter suspended pending review and discussion of the incident.
- Content in external links must be on topic and not contain racist, sexist, religiously intolerant, ableist, homophobic, transphobic, or other hateful material.
- Stay on topic.
- That’s all I can think of right now. If you have other ideas for rules, you can leave them in the comments below.
Things to think about before commenting:
- Is my comment constructive? Is it really constructive? Here’s a little primer on constructive feedback (it’s for professors giving feedback on essays, but the advice is good for other types of writing as well)
- Is my comment actually feedback, or am I trying to rewrite the piece the way I would have done it? The first is great, the second, not so much.
- Ask ask question about the authors intent before making an assumption.
- Keep in mind that English is not our universal language. People may be writing in their second (or third, or fourth) language.
- Am I being kind?
